KUCHING: The state government will wait for the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval for the use of the Sinovac vaccines.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said Sarawak will work closely with the Health Ministry on its developments.

“At the same time, we will be guided by medical and vaccines experts from the Sarawak Covid-19 Vaccines Advisory Committee (Scovac),” he said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

He was commenting on the arrival of the Sinovac vaccines in Malaysia which came in bulk totalling 200 litres, to be processed into more than 300,000 doses. The country is expected to secure about 14 million doses of the vaccine.

Dr Sim said for Sarawak, it has an ambitious vaccine rollout programme to flatten the Covid-19 curve which stemmed from the fourth wave of the outbreak.

“We want to roll out (the vaccines) to as many people as possible. It is a mammoth task in Sarawak as like anywhere else, we have to vaccinate a minimum of 70 percent of the people to achieve herd immunity,” he said.

Recently, coordinating minister of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, Khairy Jamaluddin said the NPRA is in the process of evaluating the Sinovac clinical data.

He said the Sinovac vaccine has passed the third stage of clinical trials in several countries including Brazil, Turkey and Indonesia.

China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said phase three of the clinical trials for the Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine has been carried out in many countries with over 36 million doses administered in China and abroad.

“The data and result proved that Sinovac vaccine is safe and effective. Besides, it has been deemed halal by the Indonesian authorities,” he said.
